Hunting red stags during the rut in Spain is the most exciting time of the year.
It probably has all my favorite ingredients: great friends, rutting red stags, mountain location, camping deep inside and involving horses for packing. I can’t think of a better plan!! We tend to travel far away and we don’t realize that sometimes adventure can be found right around the corner.
Last weekend we went to the Gredos Mountain range, not in search of ibex, but in search of rutting stags. We spent a couple days camping deep on those mountains with the help of a few horses to take some of the weight out of our packs.
The rut needed a few more days to get on fire, but we still managed to get a couple really nice stags. We saw mine at around 700 meters and put a beautiful one hour stalk that required some calling to get the bull into shooting distance.
We celebrated back in camp with an awesome dinner with fresh deer on the menu. Its being a while since I laughed so much on a hunt, but the crew was hard to beat.
I can’t thank Alberto Planeta from Cazaplaneta and his team enough for such an awesome weekend of real pure hunting. Thanks Samuel, Juanma and Manolo!
Also Arturo S. Lope for joining and dropping also an awesome bull too, it has being a luxury not only to have a profesional chef in camp but an awesome hunting partner. Andres thanks for joining next time we will have better luck, and Javier Martinez Urbano for documenting the whole hunt, video soon in KUIU!!!
Best of luck all of you chasing stags these days, have fun!
